How to Learn to Speak German

So the last couple of weeks I have been trying to figure out the best way to Learn German.

So the natural question I asked is…………

"What is the best way to become fluent in German?"

....and the answer I have come up with was "Immerse Myself"

This was the single most effective thing I found when learning Spanish.

But as I am not living in a German Speaking country, it is going to take some strategizing.

This is how I went about it:

How to immerse yourself in German even if you don’t live in a German speaking country?

Immersing your self requires stimulating as many mental areas as possible while studying German. You need a combination of German grammar (read and write), natively Spoken German audio (for pronunciation and vocal practice) and something that brings everything together (memory recall and application). I found that German phrases work best.

  1. I stated off by finding a German course that ticked all the above criteria and suited me best.

  2. Then I started to read German newspaper articles and watching movies with German subtitles. (Spiegel and Bild are good place for news and gossip etc.)

  3. Joined a few German language forums (aboutgerman is a great place to start) and started to speak with other German students and German’s that wanted to speak English (this really kick started me learning).

It has been a couple of weeks now and I am pleasantly surprised at my results. My grasp of written and spoken Germany has improved a lot and I am now planning a trip to Berlin to put my German to the real test.

So if you want to learn German (or any other language for that matter). It is essential to immerse yourself in the language.

This at times can be frustrating, but the end result (speaking German) is well worth it.

So, stay focused, take action and before you know it you will be ordering a Wolters bier, wearing lederhosen and eating a Bratwurst :-).

Tschüss

Did you translate anything to English when you were doing this Immersion technique because I am curious as to how you can know what they are saying without translating it.

Thanks
